Monday, August 22, 2022 at 6:00 p.m., the Blue Mound Memorial Library Board of Trustees met in the annex of the Library.  The Blue Mound Memorial Library President, Anne Byard, called to order the Board of Trustees meeting for August, 2022.

The Board recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Budget meeting opened with the distribution of the previously discussed budget  in Ordinance No. 22-2 setting forth the budget and making appropriations of sums of money for all the necessary expenditures of the Blue Mound Memorial Public Library District, Macon County, Illinois for Corporate Purposes for the Fiscal Year beginning July 1, 2022 and ending June 30, 2023.  Amy Brown made a motion to accept the Ordinance 22-2 for the budget for Fiscal Year beginning July 1, 2022 and ending June 30, 2023.  Julie Chapman seconded the motion.  Roll Call Vote indicated the following Board Members voting “Aye”:  Nancy Gorden, Sharon Reynolds, Julie Chapman, Amy Brown, Dani Noland, Anne Byard, and Diana Kupish.  There were no descenting votes.  The motion carried.

Secretary’s Report: President, Anne Byard verified that each Board member received and reviewed the July 25, 2022 Minutes that had been emailed.  Dani Noland pointed out a name correction.  There were no other questions.  Amy Brown made a motion to accept the Minutes with the correction.  Julie Chapman seconded the motion.  The motion carried with all “Aye” votes.

Treasurer’s Report:  The Library received money from the Lion’s Club to help to fund the Easter Egg Hunt, which clears the negative balance on that section of the Balance Sheet.  Julie Chapman made a motion to accept the Treasurers Report.  Nancy Gorden seconded the motion.  The motion carried with all ‘Aye’ votes.

Librarian’s Report:

  • Due to health issues, Carolyn Wetzel has been unable to clean the Library in August. She will be returning at the beginning of September.
  • The Flag Pole was installed and is now sporting a new flag. Nan Gaskill, daughter of Gilbert Hopi, (for whom the flag pole had been donated as a memorial) is aware that the work has been completed and the flag is once again flying above the Library.
  • The cost of the Ladies Night programs varies and after some discussion, it was agreed that some of the cost of the programs would be covered by memorial money in order to attract a larger group of patrons who might not otherwise attend. The whole purpose of Ladies Night is to draw in more people.
  • The Library was contacted by Special Ed Coordinator Lindsey Hale regarding Vocation School to Work program in hopes of finding a volunteer position for a Meridian student in their program. Alice Reed had previous experience with a similar program and provided ideas for a number of tasks that might be suitable for the volunteer.  It was agreed that Julie will contact Mrs. Hale and suggest a 4-week trial basis before committing to the entire school year.

Library Activities:

  • Food Science Programs held on August 1st and 3rd went very well, with 13 participants on Monday and 17 on Wednesday. They will be returning in September.
  • Blue Mound Fall Festival coloring page activity enjoyed 22 children participating.
  • Summer Reading ended with a Pool Party on Wednesday, July 27th with 68 children attending. Although the skies were overcast, and rained was predicted, it stayed dry for the party.
  • Kids Book Club had their 3rd and final meeting for the summer on August 11th to discuss the book Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier. There were 7 children attending; perhaps a smaller group was due to conflict with ball games.
  • Book Club also met on August 18th discussing Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. Jill Chlebus hosted the evening.

Upcoming Programs:

  • Adult Yoga for Beginners with Debbie Berry will be Thursday, September 1st from 6:30 – 7:30 in the Library Annex.
  • Book Club will meet September 15th to discuss The Wish by Nicholas Sparks and will be hosted by Jill Chlebus.
  • Cooking 101 for children 8 and up is scheduled for Saturday, September 17th and are planning to make cereal marshmallow bars.
  • Story Time will begin Wednesday, September 28th.

Old Business:

  • Bid for electric work in the Annex: Nancy Gorden will contact two electricians: Star Electric in Taylorville and D&D Electric out of Buffalo to get bids for the electric work in the Annex, with emphasis on including ‘prevailing wage’ language and a date for work to be completed.
  • Flag Pole – is set and complete.

New Business:  None

Personnel:  Carolyn Wetzel’s health issues have prevented her from working in August.  The staff has done their best to fill in for her.  The question of pay during her absence was discussed but it was decided that it would set a precarious precedent to do so.   She is expected to be able to return to the job in September.

Other:  None

Motion to Adjourn:  With no further business to discuss, Dani Noland made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  Amy Brown seconded the motion.  The motion carried with all “Aye” votes.  The meeting adjourned at 6:56 p.m.

The Next Regular Board Meeting will be Monday, September 26, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.

                                                                                                                                                Diana Kupish, Secretary
